Diners and Culture Ride or Drive
Highlighting small town diners and points of interest in Southern Vermont, this ride will take you through several quaint little villages and through two covered bridges.
Driving through the hillsides of East Dover you will come to the town of South Newfane and through Williamsville and its covered bridge Note (stay on center of bridge due to wear) onto Rt. 30 South for a mile until you get to the Dummerston Bridge on your left. The Dummerston Bridge is Vermont's longest covered bridge at 227 ft. This will lead you to Dummerston Center and straight on to Rt. 5 where you will turn left to go north. There is a good gas station just up the road at the intersection of Hwy 91 and Rt. 5. A point of interest and perhaps some snack is Curtis BBQ, on the north side of this intersection, with its blue school bus facility.
The town of Bellows Falls is rich in history and charm, further more it has good downtown parking at the site of three different eateries with in a few yards. Nick's Café & Grill which is a dim lit bar with a basic menu, Miss Bellows Falls Diner, and Worchester Diner Car #771 built in 1920 serving diner fare with charm.
The third eatery is The Wurst Place in Bellows Falls serving a variety of wursts and sausages.
After getting back on Rt.5 north for a few hundred yards you will turn left on 103 towards Chester Depot. Chester Depot is a nice place to stop and have a coffee at the "Country Girl Diner", sorry no Starbucks. 103 will merge with Rt.11 which will take you on a very nice scenic drive through the Vermont country side and the Town where the movie Baby Boom was filmed. Rt. 11 will bring you to Manchester where there is a myriad of things to do and stuff to buy. Here you will also have many lunch options, we would be glad to give you our recommendations. Manchester is also the home of "Hildene" the former estate of Robert Todd Lincoln, the son of President Lincoln.
Next we head south on 7A towards Arlington home to the Norman Rockwell Museum Admission $3 well worth a visit.
Further south we have the Bennington Monument, where you may ride the elevator to the 200ft observation deck and the Bennington Museum with the works of Grandma Moses and a revolutionary war exhibit. From Bennington we take Rt. 9 east through the hillsides over into Wilmington where we can walk the streets of Wilmington for some shop gawking and showing off our cars.
The Kitzhof Inn is only 7.5 miles from this town so if people have had enough they can ride home to relax by the pool or hit the hot tub.
